Homilies

Family, friends and brother clergy, may you always preach the Gospel, the Good News, while sometimes using words. I pray these stories, ideas and words help you on your journey to share your stories of God in Your Life.

I always try to avoid what I call "safe homilies" that cover the core message of the scriptures of the day but usually fail to connect with the listeners. I've been driven by a simple premises I learned in formation when our homiletics instructor was asked, "How do we determine the theme of this Sunday?" He responded, "that's easy, it's the same at every Mass...God loves us!"

I call "come Holy Spirit" and listen for His response that comes from many sources that help me connect: snippets of personal stories I recall, from TV programs, a magazine I'm reading, conversations with other people, a podcast, songs, homilies from favorite preachers…you name it. I wrap these ideas in my own words to make them my own. And I always include a "God loves us so much that He…" explanation in each homily. Including stories are so important to connect with the listeners, especially personal stories.
